Religious Accommodations

Religious Accomodation

Under the Ontario Human Rights Code (OHRC), discrimination because of creed and religion is against the law. The Code states that everyone has an equal right to access the same opportunities and benefits, and to be treated with equal dignity and respect, regardless of their religion.

Religion includes the practices, beliefs and observances that are part of a faith or religion. It does not include personal, moral, ethical or political views. Nor does the Ontario Human Rights Code extend protection to any religion that promotes violence or hate towards others, or that violates criminal law.

Academic Accommodations

Students requiring academic accommodation based on religion should follow the procedures set out in the Course Calendar or by their respective Faculty. In most cases, the student should contact their professor or Associate Dean as soon as possible to arrange accommodations for classes, assignments, tests and examinations that might be affected by a religious holiday.
